Event and Trade Show Name Badges

4.9/5 from 892 customer reviews

An event badge has about two seconds to do its job across a crowded aisle. Name first, company second, everything else smaller. Most conference badges get this backwards and put a giant event logo where the name should be.

Why it matters here

What a badge actually does for events & trade shows

Networking depends on readability

Attendees read badges at conversation distance while pretending not to. Make the name large enough that they succeed.

Roles need color coding

Speaker, exhibitor, staff, press and attendee should be distinguishable without reading anything.

Booth staff represent the brand

Exhibitors get more out of a proper branded badge than the generic one in the registration packet.

Design the badge for a two second read

First name at the largest size the badge allows, last name below it at maybe half that, company below that. The event logo goes at the top in a strip and should never compete with the name.

Print the same information on both sides. Lanyard badges spin constantly and a blank back means half the room is wearing a badge that says nothing.

A double clip lanyard, attached at two points, mostly solves the spinning problem. It is a small upgrade that changes how well the whole program works.

Color code by role, not by track

Attendee, Speaker, Exhibitor, Staff and Press are the five that matter operationally. Session tracks and ticket tiers can go in small text or on a ribbon.

Ribbons are the flexible layer. They let you add Sponsor, First Time Attendee or Board Member on site without reprinting a badge.

Exhibitor booth staff

If you are exhibiting, do not rely on the badge the show gives you. A branded badge with your company logo, worn by every person in the booth, makes a ten by ten look like a real operation. It also survives multiple shows, which the registration badge does not.

Questions

Events & Trade Shows badge questions

How large should the name be on an event badge?

Large enough to read from about six feet. On a 4 inch wide badge that usually means the first name is 36 point or more.

Why do event badges always flip around?

Single point lanyards rotate. Use a double clip lanyard and print both sides of the badge.

Should exhibitors use their own badges?

Yes. A branded badge worn by every person in the booth looks more established than the generic show badge and it gets reused at the next event.
