What to put on a restaurant badge
First name only. Last names on a service floor invite the kind of attention nobody signed up for, and a full name shrinks the type size to the point where it stops working from six feet away. Keep the name at 24 point or larger.
The second line is where you get value. Server, Bartender, Manager on Duty, Sommelier, Trainee. Guests read that line and adjust what they ask for. A Trainee line also buys your new hire a little patience.
If you run several concepts under one group, put the concept logo on the badge rather than the group name. Guests know the restaurant, not the holding company.
Magnetic versus pin in a kitchen environment
Magnetic is the default for servers and hosts because it does not damage shirts and it comes off in one motion at the end of a shift. The tradeoff is that a strong magnet can catch on a chair back or a tray edge.
Pin backing still wins for aprons, denim and anything thick. It also wins for anyone carrying a pacemaker, which is a real conversation to have before you standardize on magnets for the whole staff.
Kitchen staff usually skip badges entirely, or use a clip on a chef coat so it can be swapped between coats during a laundry cycle.
Budgeting a restaurant badge program
