Color coding is the whole system
Pick three colors and hold the line. One for permanent staff, one for substitutes and contractors, one for visitors and volunteers. A front office aide can then clear a hallway at a glance rather than reading twenty small print badges.
Do not add a fourth and fifth color for departments. The value of the system comes from a supervising adult being able to interpret it in under a second, and that breaks past three.
Breakaway lanyards are not optional
Any lanyard worn around students should have a breakaway clasp that separates under load. This is standard practice on most campuses and it is worth confirming on any order that a facilities department places for the first time.
