What a badge actually does for corporate offices
Access control and identity overlap
If the badge opens doors it needs to be a card. If it only introduces people it can be anything.

Split employee and visitor badging
Employee badges should be permanent, photographed where access control requires it, and consistent across every floor. Visitor badges should be a different color, a different shape if possible, and cheap enough that nobody minds when one leaves the building.
The single most common mistake is issuing visitors a blank version of the employee badge. From ten feet away they look identical, which is exactly the distance at which the distinction matters.
Departments and hybrid teams
Hybrid offices have a real problem: people who come in twice a month do not know each other. A department line on the badge does more work in that environment than it did when everyone sat together five days a week.
Keep the department names short. Engineering, Finance, People, Sales. Full org chart titles do not fit and do not help.
Events, offsites and all hands

Corporate Offices badge questions
Should visitor badges look different from employee badges?
Yes, obviously different. Use a distinct color and if possible a distinct shape so the difference reads from across a lobby.
Do we need photo ID badges?
Only if the badge is tied to access control or a security policy requires it. A name and department badge is enough for identification alone.
What works for a one day offsite?
Event passes. They cost a fraction of a permanent badge and do not need to come back.
