Three fasteners, three failure modes. Match the backing to the fabric and the badge stops falling off by week two.
Every badge return we get for a wrong fastener traces back to the same mistake: someone picked the backing that looked cleanest in the catalog photo instead of the one that matches the shirt it's going on. There are three real options. Each one has a job it does better than the other two, and a job it should never be asked to do.
Pin: the one that never lets go
A pin backing pushes a sharpened post through the fabric and locks it with a clutch on the back. Nothing about that mechanism depends on fabric thickness, weave, or how many layers are underneath. That's why pin is still the standard for police and security uniforms, heavy denim aprons, canvas jackets and any harness or strap where a badge absolutely cannot drop off mid-shift.
The tradeoff is a hole in the shirt. On a $12 polo that's nothing. On a tailored blazer or a silk blouse, it's a real cost, and it adds up across a wardrobe budget for client-facing staff. Pin is also the cheapest backing option, which matters when you're outfitting a large seasonal crew and every dollar per badge counts.
Magnet: the default for anything you don't want holed
A magnetic back uses a pair of graded magnets, one on the badge and one behind the fabric, clamped together through the material. On a standard polo or blazer weight, that hold is more than strong enough to survive a normal shift, including reaching, bending and the occasional bump into a shelf. It goes on in about two seconds and comes off just as fast, which matters at shift change when forty people are clocking in at once.
Magnetic backing adds about a dollar to the unit price across every tier we sell. On standard plastic badges that's $9.99 instead of $8.99 at the one-to-ten quantity, and $7.49 instead of $6.49 at 1,000 pieces and up. It's a small line item against the cost of a torn blazer or a scrub top nobody wants holed.
Two situations rule magnet out. First, thick fabric: heavy coats, quilted vests and multiple layers put too much material between the two magnets, and the pull weakens fast. Second, and this one is non-negotiable, anyone wearing a pacemaker or another implanted cardiac device should not wear a magnetic badge. Keep pin or clip badges in stock for that group and make the swap before day one, not after someone raises it.
Swivel clip: the answer nobody thinks of first
A clip grips fabric between two flat plates and pivots, so it doesn't dig a hole and doesn't need two magnets to line up. It's the right call on aprons, pocket flaps, lanyards, and anything woven loosely enough that a magnet would just spin in place instead of holding flat. Kitchens and catering staff, where fabric shifts around a lot during a shift, are a good example of a crowd better served by a clip than either of the other two.
Clips cost about the same as magnets and hold up well on medium-weight cotton. They're weaker than a pin on anything stiff or heavy, and they can work loose on thin knits over a long shift, so don't default to clip on a fabric a magnet would handle fine.

Order magnetic as your standard backing for the majority of the roster, keep a small stock of pin badges for outerwear and safety exceptions, and flag anyone with a cardiac device at onboarding rather than waiting for a complaint. It's just cheaper to get it mostly right up front.
One more thing worth checking before you order
If badges get scanned at a reader anywhere in the building, none of these three backings solve that on their own. You'll want a lanyard or a retractable reel in addition to the badge fastener, not instead of it. Plenty of clinical and corporate campuses run a magnetic badge clipped into a reel holder, which gets you the fast on-and-off of the magnet plus a hands-free scan at the door.
