A badge fails one of three ways: the print wears off, the fastener stops holding, or the surface gets scratched enough to look unprofessional. Which one you'll hit first comes down to material choice.
How each material wears
- Printed plastic: lowest cost, good for high-turnover roles and short programs. Print can scuff under heavy daily abrasion.
- Premium printed aluminum: full color on a rigid metal core, holds up to daily wear much better than plastic.
- Laser-engraved metal: the lettering is cut, not printed, so it can't wear off. The right call for long-tenure and uniformed staff.
- Real wood and chalkboard: great for hospitality and reusable roles, just keep them away from standing water.
Cleaning without wrecking anything
Wipe printed badges with a damp microfiber cloth and mild soap, then dry right away. Skip acetone, bleach and abrasive pads on printed surfaces, they attack the ink layer, not the grime. Engraved metal tolerates isopropyl alcohol fine, which matters in clinical settings where badges get wiped down between shifts.
The fastener is usually the first thing to fail
Multi-magnet fasteners hold through blazers, scrubs and aprons without piercing fabric, and they're why a badge stays level all shift long. Pins are fine on uniforms with a dedicated tab. Adhesive fasteners need a clean, alcohol-wiped surface and 24 hours before wear. If badges keep ending up crooked or lost, change the fastener before you change the badge.
Replace it, or just reorder
- Replace when text is unreadable at six feet, or the surface is deeply scratched.
- Reorder from the stored file when the badge is fine but the person or title changed.
- Keep a small stock of blank kits or chalkboard badges on hand for same-day needs.
