Rigid or vinyl
Rigid holders keep a card flat, which matters when it gets swiped or scanned dozens of times a day. Vinyl bends, which is fine for a two day conference and not fine for a hospital badge that also opens doors.

Shielded holders and when they are pointless
A shielded holder blocks a proximity card from being read until you slide it out. That is useful for high security sites and irrelevant for a printed name badge with no chip in it. If your badge is paper or plastic with printed text, save the money.

What size card do standard badge holders fit?
CR80, which is 2.125 x 3.375 inches, the same size as a credit card. That is the default for photo ID.
Vertical or horizontal?
Vertical for lanyards, horizontal for reels and belt clips. Match the orientation of the printed card so nothing reads sideways.
