Each one starts as a rigid engraving-grade plastic blank with a printed face and a clear protective coat over the artwork.

Silver reads neutral against almost any uniform color and is the safest pick when different departments wear different shirts. Full-color digital print on the blank, then a protective clear coat.

It shrugs off hand sanitizer, glass cleaner and pocket keys. Deep gouges show, but the print underneath does not rub off the way a laminated paper insert does.

The printable window on this blank is 2.75 x 0.75 in, which leaves room for one strong name line plus a short title. Long hyphenated surnames are where this size runs out of room.

Names are the thing that breaks a layout, not titles. Set the longest name on your list first, then size everything else around it. If it will not fit at the size in the table below, drop to a first name plus last initial before you shrink the type, because a badge nobody can read from four feet away is worse than a shortened name.

A bar pin is the cheapest, most foolproof backing. It will leave a pinhole, so it belongs on supplied uniforms, aprons and heavier fabrics rather than someone's own blouse.
